VIA LOS PADRES RESIDENCE
Santa Barbara, CA
4,100 SF
Inspired by the radial arrangement of a pinwheel, the Via Los Padres Residence plays on the idea of compressing and opening up spaces. TGA designed the home as a series of indoor and outdoor spaces, offering exceptional privacy from the street, while opening up expansive views of the ocean, islands, and idyllic valleys. The building is tucked 7 feet below street level to provide a sense of seclusion. At the same time, 14 and a half foot vaulted ceilings and clerestory windows flood the interiors with sunlight and lend them a sense of airiness and grandeur.
PLAY IN SPATIAL VOLUMES AND MATERIALITY
The design creates a playful spatial experience defined by dynamic volumes and differentiated by changes in materiality. The textured wood ceilings pleasantly counterpose the smoothly finished vaulted open areas. Interstitial spaces like patios, courtyards, pools, and decks stitch together the indoor rooms and expand the living space. The swimming pool is placed on the hillside edge such that the infinity edge floats dramatically in space.
RESPECTING AND ELEVATING CONTEXT
The building responds to street and property lines, with views to the southwest. By nesting the building into the site, TGA ensured that neighbors’ views of the valley and ocean are not blocked by the new home. Rather than disrupting the neighborhood, the Via Los Padres Residence elevates and brings new beauty to the surrounding area.
