VENTURA HOUSE
Ventura, CA
2,514 SF
For this project, TGA designed a new residence for a client whose home burned down in California’s 2017 Thomas Fire—a loss of not only the physical structure but also the family history and traditions associated with it. Located on the same site, the new house is designed to recall cherished aspects of the original home while creating a new place where the family could rebuild their life together.
Two white plaster volumes recall the original house’s geometry and define the perimeters of the new structure, flanking a glass-enclosed living space that opens onto a garden terrace and overlooks the surrounding mountains and ocean.
BALANCING PRIVACY AND OPENNESS
The outdoor dining terrace is tucked between the two white plaster volumes, creating a sense of seclusion and privacy from the neighbors. Floor-to-ceiling windows between the dining terrace and the interior spaces of the house create an open flow between indoor and outdoor environments.
SOCIAL CORE
Together, main living area and garden terrace act as a social core for the house, joining the more private spaces at the peripheries into a cohesive living environment. Full-height glass partitions maintain open sight-lines between the living spaces.
