SHORELINE RESIDENCE
Santa Barbara, CA
2,260 SF
Situated in an open field on a bluff overlooking the ocean, the Shoreline Residence is integrated into the site with the raising and recessing of the ground plane. This 2-bed and 2.5-bath summer house is a linear volume with sea views to the south and mountain views to the north. A prominent outdoor staircase on the northern entry facade connects the ground to the single flat roof that extends beyond the building’s footprint to float over an outdoor kitchen and living area, supported by V-shaped steel columns.
RESPONDING TO THE RUGGED LANDSCAPE
The building’s form reflects the horizontality of the surrounding mountains, plain fields, cliff edges, and the ocean, while negotiating the rugged landscape with a play of levels. The angled entry to the house is marked by the retaining wall of the outdoor staircase on one side and mini sunken patios on the other. A series of outdoor sit-outs to the south extend into a large deck area for the rectangular pool, partially covered by the upward-tapering roof overhang finished with a wood-slatted soffit.
